Kate Bowditch

Watercolor and acrylic are my go-to media for creation. Although I began drawing as a small child, and later used clay for sculpture, I am now almost exclusively working in paint.

When I began painting, I used acrylic paint. I love acrylics and will always use that type of paint for certain works. Watercolor, however, began wooing me some time back, and I gave in. There is a companionship between watercolor and me that is hard to explain. Perhaps it is in the slightly translucent quality of the finished work. Perhaps it is in the never-quite-controllable personality of the paint itself.  Or both.

Recently, I find myself adding pieces of the natural world to my paintings. It might be sticks or feathers, or, in the case of the Owl Shaman, bleached bones of mice.

The major developing themes of my work:

  • The sudden hugeness of landscapes and sky
  • The inhabitants of that land and sky
  • Relations between the earth and its inhabitants
